Benjamin to finish playing career with Dragons

08/05/2026

Dragons RFC can today confirm club centurion James Benjamin will finish his playing career at the club at the conclusion of this season.

Benjamin has made 104 appearances to date for the Men of Gwent after making his club debut in 2013.

A product of the Dragons Academy system, the 32-year-old has featured for the club over the last 13 seasons.

The hugely popular Newport-born forward – affectionally known as Jumbo to friends and fans alike - has operated in the back row, centre and most recently at hooker for his home club.

Benjamin has also impressed on the Sevens stage during his time at the club, representing Wales at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and helping fire the club to the 2015 Singha Sevens title.

Dragons would like to thank James for his outstanding contribution and professionalism throughout his playing time at the club.

The club plans to mark his playing career with Dragons during the presentation at the conclusion of the final home league game with Edinburgh Rugby this Saturday evening.

Head Coach Filo Tiatia said: “James has been great to work with over the last few seasons.

“He has also coached in our Academy set-up, and he is a Man of Gwent with his superpower around his empathy. James understands the DNA and the Gwent mentality. But also, the essence of what this club stands for.

“He’s played over 100 games so it’s great that he isn't set to move too far away. He’ll remain connected to us and I’m looking forward to him being around.

“There’s no doubt he’ll be a good coach. He’s tactically very smart, and he reads the game well after playing in midfield, flanker and hooker for us. We’re looking to work together going forward as he’s a top man.”
