Skipper signs! Dragons RFC are delighted to announce that co-captain Angus O’Brien has today agreed new terms to remain with the Men of Gwent.
Caerleon-born O’Brien – who has made 120 appearances for his home club – has been in sensational form throughout this season and has now underlined his commitment by putting pen to paper on a new contract.
A product of the Dragons Academy system, O’Brien is currently thriving in his second spell at Dragons RFC with his experience, leadership and versatility proving a massive asset.
The 31-year-old, named the club’s Player of the Season at the end of the 2022/23 campaign, has now agreed a new multi-year contract to stay at Rodney Parade.
Head Coach Filo Tiatia said: “We’re all delighted that Angus has signed a new contract as he is a hugely important and influential figure within our squad.
“Angus is playing some of his best rugby and is continuing to grow as a leader within our squad, alongside Ben Carter.
“We now look forward to Angus continuing to produce his best rugby and drive the club forward in the seasons ahead.”
O’Brien – who represented Wales Sevens at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast – made his 100th appearance for the club on Boxing Day 2024.
He has scored 492 points to date for Dragons - placing him fourth in the club’s all-time list of points accumulators and just eight points off joining Jason Tovey, Ceri Sweeney, and Sam Davies in the 500 Club.
O’Brien said: “I’m delighted to have re-signed and extend my time at my home region.
“There’s no place like Rodney Parade on a match day and I’m looking forward to continuing to play there over the next few years in front of our amazing fans.
“I feel like we’re in a really positive place and I’m excited about where we can go as a group over the next few years.”
