With 90 seconds of Dragons’ EPCR Challenge Cup clash against Lyon left on the clock, Harrison Keddie plunged over for his second score off the bench to level the scores at 21- all.
With the conversion some 10 yards in from the touchline it was now up to captain Angus O’Brien to turn the draw into a sweet victory for Dragons players, staff and supporters.
O'Brien started at 15 but had since switched to ten and duly obliged with the conversion, nailing the kick perfectly between the uprights and giving his side a hugely important 23-21 win.
“It was the most important thing tonight is that we won,” said O’Brien after the match.
“Even at 21-6 down I still felt there was a long time to go and fair play to the boys they showed great character, great grit and great determination everything we have shown.
“I’m just so pleased for everyone that we were able to get over the line and I think it’s important that we build on that take confidence from the way we finished that game.”
O’Brien’s kick ensured that Dragons didn’t end up drawing a third game this season having already shared the points at Rodney Parade against Sharks and Ospreys.
“We've come so close on so many occasions at Rodney especially this year,” said O’Brien.
“To get one over the line tonight I think its massive for the group, we’ve just got build on that, take great confidence.
“We were on top up front, we used that as a real weapon, to be fair the boys, they were outstanding in that department and got us up the field and that got us back into the game and ultimately got us the win so credit to them and the work they’ve been doing.”
Now Dragons head into a home clash against Connacht on Saturday (December 20) before back-to-back derbies against Cardiff and then Scarlets back on Parade on New Year’s Day.
“It’s a great time of year and the games come thick and fast and for us now we’ve just got to take the games one at a time,” said O’Brien.
“It wasn’t perfect tonight but we found a way to win, it wasn’t perfect tonight but like I said we found a way to win and that was the most important thing.
“We’ve got to take real confidence from that, take it week by week with another massive game again next week against Connacht at home and hopefully we can build on that and keep on improving.”
