Hewitt: Semi-final a massive achievement

01/05/2026

Former Dragons RFC back Ashton Hewitt has delivered a powerful message of belief and positivity ahead of the club’s EPCR Challenge Cup semi-final clash with Montpellier Hérault Rugby this weekend.

On duty with Premier Sports for its live coverage of the big EPCR Challenge Cup knockout game, Hewitt knows what this stage of European rugby means to the club – and believes the current group should embrace every second of the opportunity.

“I think it’s massive,” said Hewitt. “Europe has always been that little bit of an outlet of positivity for the Dragons, it gives you focus, it gives you targets, especially when you get deeper into the season.”

The former fan favourite highlighted the progress made this season, pointing to a growing belief and resilience within the squad.

“There has been steady progress. There’s seven wins this year which is the best in six years. It’s been a really positive season, there seems to have been a mentality shift and the team is staying in games.

"They need to keep doing what they’re doing – stick to that process, have belief, recognise the improvements and go out to France really enjoy it.”

Hewitt also praised the leadership within the group, singling out key figures who will be crucial in the south of France.

“Guys like Aaron, Ben Carter, Angus – they’re massive. Their leadership on and off the pitch is huge and they’ve been pivotal in everything the Dragons have done this season.”

Beyond the squad, Hewitt was keen to underline the role of the supporters, whose backing has helped fuel the team’s run to the final four.

“The support this season has been absolutely amazing… I’ve never seen so many Dragons jerseys around Newport," he said.

The fans are committing to away trips – it’s incredible. My words to them - keep the support, keep the positivity, keep the faith.”

And his message to his former colleagues, the Dragons players ahead of the semi-final is simple: “Enjoy the whole experience. It’s a massive achievement and point of pride reaching this stage already.

"There’s no better place to go and show who you are in a semi-final, out in France. Just enjoy it and embrace the occasion.”
