Newport Secure Home Semi Final

16/02/2026

For the second successive weekend for our Gwent sides it was a case of two games and two wins in the Super Rygbi Cup.

Following his brace last weekend, Harri Ackerman proved to be the match winner for Newport, scoring with a little more than 10 minutes remaining helping the Black and Ambers win at home to RGC.

Elsewhere, fly-half Will Ford backed up his nine points on debut last weekend with two conversions in each half as Ebbw Vale won away at Bridgend.

The results mean that Newport RFC have secured a home semi-final in the Super Rygbi Cup with top spot in Pool A.

The Black and Ambers had the perfect start when hooker Henry Palmer broke right of the maul and dived over for the opening try after three minutes. RGC responded with a converted try of their own to take the lead before captain Ben Roach strode over with Harrison James converting.

An exchange of penalties between RGC fly-half Billy McBryde and James ensured Newport held a two-point lead at half-time.

RGC retook the lead soon after half-time courtesy of McBryde’s boot, before Dafydd Buckland popped the ball to Fin Baker with the winger arcing around the cover defence and sprinting in to score, with James again converting.

The visitors scored their second try of the game with 25 minutes remaining, with McBryde extending the lead with a conversion and penalty before Ackerman drove hard to cross the tryline and help his side to a 29-26 win.

Elsewhere, Ebbw Vale secured a bonus-point win at Bridgend. Despite conceding an early try, converted scores for Adam Williams and Joe Franchi ensured Ebbw held a seven-point lead at halftime.

Joe Franchi added a second in the second half before his brother Dom secured the bonus-point score, again converted by Ford, either side of a try from the hosts.

A late try for the Ravens made for a nervous finish for Ebbw but they held on to remain second in Pool B.

With this weekend’s results, Pontypool know they can secure a semi-final spot with a win at Cardiff on Thursday night, so long as they earn the same number or more match points than the winner of RGC v Carmarthen Quins.

Meanwhile, Ebbw Vale will secure a semi-final spot with two bonus points or a draw at home to Llandovery on Saturday.
